I am on song #8 now, out of ten, and looking forward to when they are all finished so I can get on with my musical life. It has been a bigger project than I expected, partly because of other things going on in my life, partly because of the challenges of transcribing from an old 1980s cassette tape. Truly analogue :-)

Here's the organ piece - https://youtu.be/8UzFPVzmo2k?si=71RvnrI2shccdMJU

Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/73157602023-12-06T23:39:46-12:002023-12-06T23:42:43-12:00New Video
I have a new video up. I wrote the track in 2014 a couple of months before my stroke. That must have knocked it out of my head and I forgot about it until rediscovering it this week. However I am returning to a mental place where I can work again, whilst never having stopped entirely, except for the last week or so. Someone said something to me this week that resonates deeply with me, and will do for many others - ‘For a creative person, not to be able to create is like suffocating’.

I am still working on the rearrangement of the 1987 musical that I wrote with David Chandler's libretto - ‘Rag Doll’ - for String Quartet and voice. I am close to finishing song 4 out of 10. I am also, very slowly (very very slowly..) still working on my Trumpet Concerto. I have the skeleton of all three movements in my head, and have started putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard) for the beginning of each one (the first movement is about half way there, in fact).

Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/72048422023-05-07T22:16:52-12:002023-05-07T22:16:53-12:00New work
I have started work on writing a Trumpet Concerto. I don't expect to complete this quickly due to all the other things currently happening in my life - my Musical Access work has got very busy as all my clients are finally completely out of lockdown (about a year after everyone else!) and I am also re-arranging a musical I composed the music for many years ago for string quartet. I couldn't get it out of my head though, and it was only after a few days and some googling I realised that the version I knew of this song was by Indio, aka Gordon Peterson, who wrote it. He only released one album, Big Harvest, in 1989, which I was given by a friend who thought I would like it - and I did - it is a brilliant album, and now something of a collector's item, if you have the vinyl (sadly I didn't - I only had a cassette, which I lost, which was why I hadn't heard this song for so long). By this time, the song had wormed its way into my ear, and the only way I could cure myself was by doing a cover of it. Claire Dunn and Mella agreed to help me out with it. It was also a good excuse to use my 'personally manufactured', baritone guitar remodelled from a bass acoustic guitar by my friend and talented guitar maestro Paul Belben.

Not that I'm not doing anything, more that I am doing too much. I have several projects swirling around in my head or partly finished, but no focus or energy to finish any of them. This hasn't been helped by a death in the family and catching Covid, both close together. However, having recovered, almost, from the Covid, I am now close to finishing one particular smaller project. More on that in a week or three. Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/69342912022-03-28T08:43:42-12:002022-03-28T08:43:42-12:00Metamorphosen Digitiphonic Changes completed
After 3 years - the first year researching and deciding if I had the courage to attempt it, then 2 years arranging, producing and recording, I have at last finished my Digitiphonic version of Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen.

Richard Strauss wrote Metamorphosen at the end of World War 2 as a lament for the destruction of the cultural life and architecture of Berlin - and everywhere else in Europe I guess too - so, even though I started it so long ago, with no idea of what would take place in Ukraine, it seems particularly relevant now, with the needless desecration of war once again tearing apart the fabric and architecture of Europe..

Originally Strauss meant Metamorphosen to be a Choral piece, but he changed it to a string piece when he was offered a commission for a strings only piece. So, in this version I have used the words, by Goethe, that he was planning to use. They are beautiful words - the English translation is as follows -

"No one can really know himself,
detach himself from his inner being
Yet, each day he must put to the test,
What is in the end, clear.
What he is and what he was,
what he can be and what he might be.

But, what goes on in the world,
No one really understands it rightly,
and also up to the present day,
no one desires to understand it.
Conduct yourself with discernment.
Just as the day offers itself;
Think always: it's gone well up to now,
so might it go until the end."

The final mix is currently with the talented mastering engineer Marcin Bociński in Warsaw. Hopefully it will be finished by early April, then released shortly after that.
Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/68842752022-01-30T23:41:24-12:002022-01-30T23:53:37-12:00String Quartetettes 0-10 released on all internet music platforms
My String Quartetettes 0-10 are released on all internet music platforms now. This will be the second movement of my first String Quartet (If I finish the other movements that is)

Further platforms to follow later in the month. I first started writing these when I bought a Windows tablet after my stroke in 2014, and installed an app called Staffpad on it, which lets you write music out longhand with a pen, recognises your writing (if you are careful) and renders it as printed notes. I thought the discipline of having to carefully write music so it could be recognised by the program would be good for the recovery of my right hand, which barely worked. Over the next few years I would write one out every now and again between other projects, then export it to my computer to finish it off, but as they are very short it has taken a while to build up enough of them to make it worth releasing them. When I have built up my stamina and patience, and also finished writing Digitiphonies, I hope to start writing full length Quartets, but we’ll see. They're just a bit of fun really.

I am now halfway (14 minutes) through my Digitiphonic re-invention of Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen. I am not sure I would have attempted this if I had realised what I was taking on, but I don't regret it. How could I, with such an epic piece of music. My sheer terror of letting down this awesome composition, together with the thrill of discovering the depth of Strauss' notes and modulations, coupled with Goethe's timeless words (which RS was originally planning to use for this piece) have given me the momentum to keep going. Also the help given to me originally by Music Engraver Graham Hall, and then the sweet alto vocals of Claire Dunn and Mella Barnes. Without this support I may not have got very far into this 28 minute classic. It can all still go wrong – it has taken me about a year to get this far and it perhaps will be another year before I finish it.

I have started remixing 'Culmination' from Digitiphony 3 final movement in Dolby Atmos surround. I think this format may be about to become more mainstream as an immersive music format, though of course, in the history of music formats there have been many casualties along the road so no-one can predict which ones will stay the course. But I think music has been itching for a new format for decades - the gradual creeping, pervasive compression of music files on the internet to stream them has had a numbing effect on music quality, though it is understandable how and why it has happened. But Dolby Atmos has been around in cinemas and theatres for a while now, and the technology is spreading to people's homes and, more importantly, AI and software developments have meant that it can be translated into headphones listening. Our two ears make 3 dimensional sense of sound surrounding us, after all, so why shouldn't that be possible with artificial intelligence and computer software?

Also I am back working on my Digitiphonic version of R Strauss' Metamorphosen, again, after gaps and distractions. I need to accept that this is a long term project and pace myself. I am terrified I will make a poor rendition of a much admired, aesthetically profound and inspired piece of music, so I am taking my time and being careful and meticulous. I am working on the second phrase of the words by Goethe that Strauss was originally going to use for the music, before it became a string piece. These words of Goethe's are deeply moving, and are one reason why I can't let this project go.
Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/66385022021-05-23T21:31:47-12:002021-05-23T21:31:47-12:00Kingley Vale photo montage
I went down to Kingley Vale in the South Downs, UK, to check my memories of it were correct while I was writing the Tone Poem of the same name. I took lots of photographs, retracing the steps of my childhood walks in that magical, mystical and inspiring place. I have assembled them into a video and put it on Youtube, accompanied by the music I wrote.

Kingley Vale is a mixture of ancient Yew Forests, Steep Hills and antiquated burial mounds. the Yew Trees are believed to be up to two thousand years old, the burial mounds even older.

A Tone Poem was a descriptive, orchestral, programmatic piece inspired by a certain place or situation. I walked up Kingley Vale many times as a young child, then as an adult. This music was based on the first of those journeys that I can remember - I would have been about seven. When I was three quarters of the way through writing the music, I decided to take a trip down there, as lockdown was easing. it's only 10 miles away from where I live. It all seemed amazingly familiar, despite the fact that I haven't been there for many years..

The two projects in particular that I am working on are both educative and inspiring, but I would not have thought to do them without being nudged into them. The first, I have been meaning to do for a while, but was waiting to finish my tenth Digitiphony before letting it engross me. I first heard Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen a few years ago, and it had a profound effect on me. I knew then that one day I would have to have a go at re-interpreting it in Digitiphonic style, but this idea was accelerated greatly when my friend, and music engraver, Graham Hall transcribed the whole thing for me (in a week ! - that would have taken me a year if I had tried to do it) into Dorico, which meant that instead of squinting at a pocket score I could port over midi files from Dorico to my DAW, saving me loads of time and inspiring me at the same time, also leaving me with enough energy to re-envisage Strauss' notes through electro-orchestral ears, and also to play with the idea of using the words by Goethe that first inspired him to write the music (it was going to be a choral piece originally, apparently) to take the music into the vocal realm as well as the Digitiphonic one. The second project is a challenge from my friend Richard Howard who, when I completed Digitiphony 10, suggested I write a Tone Poem. This musical form, though more something from the end of the 19th Century/beginning of the 20th than something employed in the 21st, first piqued my interest when I became obsessed with Bax's 3rd Symphony ('Tintagel' by Arnold Bax is one of the best known Tone Poems) and apparently Richard had been thinking for a while I should have a go at composing one. He said I needed to remember a place that meant a lot to me, and base it on that. I had no trouble remembering a place - Kingley Vale in the South Downs, which I first went to as a young child - it was a yew forest, burial mounds, steep hills and a view down to the Solent and English Channel from the top. It is a completely magical place. The reason I feel as if I am back at school is because to complete the challenge I feel I should only use orchestral instruments - as composers who wrote Tone Poems (Symphonic Poems) did, 'back in the day' - despite my natural inclination to compose in Electro, as well as Orchestral, soundscapes.
Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/65412442021-02-05T23:24:05-12:002021-02-05T23:26:35-12:00Digitiphony 10 and 4 videos
I have two new videos out - one video made by VJ Sadler Johnson of a Trance Edit from Digitiphony 4, also a Teaser Video for Digitiphony 10, which is now available on all internet music platforms

I walked down to the beach just as the sun was rising over the North Sea. It was an incredibly still, foggy morning, that was destined to become a day of clear blue skies. As the sun rose and burnt through the fog I stood, listening to the waves lap up around my feet, and then started videoing the sunrise on my phone. When I got home I realised that the morning had been so still that the audio of the waves was in fact very useable (normally wind noise would overwhelm all the other sounds) so I wrote an ambient piece of music to go with the tranquil sound of the waves. It is only this year that I have got round to finishing the piece as I have been so busy working on Digitiphony 10 (even though I put the video I made last year up on youtube) and today that track, called 'Suntide' was released on all the streaming services - Spotify, Apple, Tidal etc and also as downloads on Bandcamp
Suntide by M L Dunn

It has been a long, long journey writing this Digitiphony but I think I can see the last part of the road opening up before me. I'm still not entirely sure how much more I have to write, even how it is going to end (normally I at least have some idea of how I am going to finish a Digitiphony, but not this time) - like all Digitiphonies, the writing of it is an adventure that leads me to unpredictable outcomes.

It feels like this score and Dorico have developed, like brother and sister, in tandem (I couldn't have done this in any other app). It’s now been sent to a master engraver to be tweaked, burnished and finalised (also in Dorico, which has so many levels) before presenting it to orchestras for commission rehearsal and, hopefully, its Orchestral Premier (pandemic allowing) in late 2021/2022

Yet today, I look back to being 19 and it seems just the other week, even though, believe me it's a LOT longer than that. The song was called 'Nowhere' and was written for the first and only album released, on vinyl, by the band I was a part of then ('In Order of Appearance' by The Cast - 1981 https://www.discogs.com/The-Cast-In-Order-Of-Appearance/release/6099439 ) Together with Mella, the wonderful, musically empathetic singer I met last year, I made a remake, as in the original the instrumentation was just piano, but I added a violin part. Together with one of my old managers, Jennie Beaumont and some very cool helpers in Leeds, we also made a video. Here is the result

I hope everyone is doing OK in these weird times. I am OK but managed to pick up an infection in my leg which stopped me functioning for a while, also I have been sorting out a way of streaming music sessions to my clients, as I can no longer see them in person due to the Pandemic, which has taken a fair amount of sorting out. Slowly I am getting back to working on my Tenth Digitiphony. I count my blessings and I feel for those who have lost all of their work and for those who have lost loved ones. Now is not an easy time. Be safe everyone, live each day and be aware of the good things you have in your life and treasure them.

We all have our ways of getting through hard times - music is a great way, as is humour and expression of love and empathy, both for yourself and others. One of my ways, of course, is making music, and when Mella sent me this amazing picture that was an out-take from when she sang Le Rêve de La Vie for the video, it inspired me to make a shortened remix with just her singing section, so I could us the is picture as the artwork.

I had no idea when Mella sang this a few months ago that in such a short time life really would become like a dream. Take care everyone, keep smiling. And keep washing those hands :-)
Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/62356942020-03-03T03:07:12-12:002020-03-03T03:07:12-12:00Spirithaesia
'Spirithaesia' - my 5 minute music meditation, is released today on Apple, Spotify, Amazon etc and also for the first time can be bought as an uncompressed 16bit download direct from this site at https://mldunn.net/spirithaesia
Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/62332852020-02-29T23:35:54-12:002020-02-29T23:38:27-12:00Sunday Meditation
I took a short break from working on my 10th Digitiphony to make a little 5 minute musical meditation using my new Crystal Singing Bowl, my (old) Tibetan Singing Bowl and a set of samples of an extended Freenotes Wing.
I hope you all have a wonderful, happy holiday season. Thank you for the support this year; for listening to the music I make and for visiting and 'liking' my various socials, videos and pages. The musical highlight of my year was meeting the singer Mella, and working with her on past songs I wrote - next year may see more of that, but with material I have written specially for her - the first of these is a 'Dream Interlude' in my Quantum Mass, or what I have come to realise will be, if I finish it, my Tenth Digitiphony. Something I thought would never happen. That should appear in late January or February.

Have a Prosperous, Productive and Peaceful 2020 !

I have finally completed Part 1 of A Quantum Mass - and I have realised that, if I finish it (by no means certain) it will, in fact, be my Tenth Digitiphony. I had been shying away from calling it a Digitiphony, partly as I only ever intended to write 9, and partly because once I have committed to writing a Digitiphony I know I am committing to a long period of hard work, self doubt, doubt in my equipment to keep functioning while I overload it with huge sample libraries, inordinately CPU hungry VSTs and long projects and also an inability to really focus on anything else until it is finished. But I guess we can't change who we are, and I certainly can't choose what my Muse chooses to drive me to do, whatever my own wishes may be. That I have learnt, over many years. And in fact what my Muse wishes me to do is what I feel most comfortable doing, anyway. So Digitiphony 10 it is. For the next several years, probably.

When recording 'Conscience' I was lucky enough to be able to benefit from the singing of Mella Barnes (www.mellamusic.com) who contributed to some of the harmonies. I was completely blown away by her singing and I knew immediately I wanted to work with her again. I sent her a copy of the ballad 'Be Like This River' that was originally written for Clare Begley of Ltd Company, then performed by uk heights, both bands I have played with in former lives. She agreed to sing it and the result is amazing. It should be released in the next few weeks, in the meantime, here is the video -

I have completed another new track, with the help of Justine Perry, lyricist. I first wrote the words 'Conscience, leave me alone' and the tune to the chorus of this song when I was in the sixth form at school, so probably 1978 or 1979. I then could not finish it for years, though I tried, until I had a dream in the months after my stroke in 2014 about a 'paradise beach' at an intersection of oceans, which in my dream was called 'Cape Understand' - which gave me more lyrical ideas.
I have started work on a new long form musical piece. It's not a Digitiphony, but will have Digitiphonic elements, and will take me as long, if not longer. It is choral and formal. Like a Mass for Agnostics. Or something.

I read a poem by Julie Goldman, who I have been lucky enough to get to know over the last few months, which inspired me to write the first piece of music that Claire Dunn and I have collaborated on for quite a few years. Julie's Poem is called 'This World' and it is a beautiful observance of the fragility of our planet. It will be officially released on 3rd June, but it is currently up at my Soundcloud -

The theme from Digitiphony 3 played on a Roli Seaboard Block. A wonderfully expressive keyboard innovation. Sadly I can only afford this little one currently but the 49 key Seaboard Rise is on my bucket list. Suits the whole Digitiphony concept beautifully.

When I was at school, many moons ago, I half wrote a song. Though other tunes I wrote were finished, this one never resolved itself for some reason. The chorus was all I could manage to write. The words "Conscience, leave me alone, I'll get you on your own" were an expression of my adolescent frustration with an emerging sense of morality that just seemed to spoil everything when I was busy trying to rebel and have (what I thought) was fun. Many decades later I was explaining this to lyricist Justine Perry and she accepted the challenge of helping me finish the lyrics to the song. This coincided with a powerful dream I had where I found myself on a beautiful beach by an ocean, it seemed a place where the cares of the world, karma, doing the right thing (or trying to) could be laid to rest for good. In the dream, I asked myself what this place was called. "Cape Understand" came the reply.

The single from Digitiphony 9 is released today. Called 'Another Parting Gesture' it is a custom edit of the last 4 minutes of the Digitiphony, which is a different thing to just taking the whole of the last track, as track 5 of 'Flows of Time' is longer.
This time last week I was on the beach at Aldeburgh in Suffolk and I have been suffering withdrawal symptoms from it ever since we got back. Luckily I managed to get a video of the dawn waves coming in early one morning as the sun rose over the North Sea. Obviously I couldn't resist mixing it with a smidgeon of music to duet with the waves. This was also the moment I discovered the microphone on my phone is stereo ;p

Now that I have finished my Digitiphonies I have some time to do whatever I feel like, without a reason. So today was spent trying out my new mic, which thinks it is a Neumann U67 (but sadly isn't, but it's still lovely) messing around on an 'unplugged' version of the old UKH track Light of the World

Well it looks like I have finished Digitiphony 9. It still has to be sent down to Essex to be mastered (which I am not doing myself this time, for that I have enlisted the help of the talented mastering engineer Dave Blackman at Hiltongrove, who mastered the UKH album Welcome to Life in 2005) but, subject to further listening on my part, I feel in my bones it is done. I recognise the feelings of being musically spent and disinterest, aversion even, to what I have produced that I know so well from finishing the last eight Digitiphonies. This Digitiphony is finished with me.

I am very grateful and proud that my old friend, the artist David Chandler, has painted a picture for the artwork for the album. After all that has happened since I wrote the first Digitiphony it seems very fitting that his art should adorn what will almost certainly be the last.

So by now everyone has heard of GDPR, in Europe at least. So as to keep to the spirit and letter of this, two months ago I resolved to send out emails to everyone on my mailing list to get them to resubscribe if they wished. In doing so I inadvertently and irreversibly deleted the data of the list. If you were one of the people on the list, I apologise for not telling you this individually, but in view of this catastrophic (well it's not really catastrophic is it ?) lapse of technological self control I have decided to no longer have a mailing list. My facebook (www.facebook.com/michaellisledunn) and twitter (https://twitter.com/MikeLisleDunn) pages, as well as this blog, will always have the musical activities I am working on, and as I am immersed in my final Digitiphony, and when I finish that, scoring all 9 Digitiphonies out for Orchestra and Electro there is not much to impart by email. As always my Spotify and Apple Music catalogues have a large part of the music I have written up, and I'm getting too old to multitask. So will y'all forgive me ? Sorry :-(

I have a running joke with a colleague and old friend of mine, composer Chris Broom; he finds it hilarious that my first school was called Great Ballard, as one of the defining features of my early songwriting career was that my ballads were much better than my uptempo tracks (everyone knows a fast song is harder to write than a slow one) so he thought it most appropriate my school had that name. Of the ballads I wrote, the most successful (it won the Radio Victory Song Competition and earned an honourable mention in the World Song Competition, both in the 1990s and was covered by two bands, Ltd Company and uk heights) was called 'Be Like This River'. It was also the hardest to write - it was about two close musician friends of mine who had a relationship that broke down and pretty much destroyed both of their lives in the process. I have submitted this for the anthology 'New Music Shelf' and to do so had to make a recording of it, which I did, as a solo piano/vocal piece - you can hear that on my soundcloud pages - https://soundcloud.com/m-l-dunn/be-like-this-river - and also the score is now up for sale at SMP press http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/be-like-this-river-piano-and-voice-digital-sheet-music/20525189

As promised here are the first 25 mins of Digitiphony 8, which has now become something of a personal record for me in that the longest seamless piece of music I had written, until now, was 'Lying Back and Falling' on the U Kay Hytz album 'Ambients' in 1997. This looks like it's going to be more like 35 minutes. In 1997 I was constricted by the length of one spool of 8 Track tape - now I have no such limits but even on a computer it is quite unwieldy and tricky to keep one piece this length all alive at the same time.

I love the way how, once written, music can take on a life of its own, and like a child can go off to do things that totally surprise its creator. I wrote this tune in 1989 for Director Peter Sykes' Tourist Video about the UK. Like most commissions, I wrote it to a deadline, with not quite as much time as I would have liked. Nearly 30 years later, my long time friend and erstwhile bandmate Chris Broom wrote some lyrics and a middle section for it and recorded it with various people. If you had told me then, when I was sweating trying to finish it in time, that in 2017 it would be sung in a cathedral in Peterborough by talented twin sopranos I would have laughed manically and wondered if lack of sleep was making me hallucinate

I have written a new String Quartetette. Though it's called number 7 its actually my Eighth as the series begins with No. 0.5. Don't ask. You can hear it and read the score on the Quartettes page on this site http://www.mldunn.net/string_quartetettes/

I am finally giving in and starting work on Digitiphony 8. A thematic and formulaic idea has been growing in my head, and though I have tried to distract myself with other musical tasks I don't think I can ignore it any more. I am not sure when Digitiphonies are going to leave me alone but my vague idea that writing seven might be enough to retire from this herculean (to me at least) task is not working out. I have got about half way through scoring out Digitiphony 1, and I will continue to score them all out, with or without help (please ?) from others but to just score out music that I have already written is not enough to keep my poor brain stable, sadly.

Well I was not expecting that. The writer Justine Perry sent me some lyrics on Sunday last weekend, I cast my eye over them, not realising that they would grab me by the... arms... within 5 hours I had sketched out music and a vocal line to go with them and less than a week later I had a finished, recorded song. I love it when my muse gets fired like that ;p

Firstly, I have a new video page - http://www.mldunn.net/video/ which includes all the videos I have made or been involved in including my own stuff, uk heights etc

In March Digitiphony 7 will be released. When I started writing these musical leviathans I had no idea I would get this far. it has been a voyage of discovery, fear, loathing, loving, illness, stamina-seeking and recovery. Somewhere along the road I decided I would try and make 10 Digitiphonies in my lifetime. It seemed appropriate as they would never have been written without the digital revolution, and the digital revolution would never have happened without the digits 1 and 0. When I had a stroke whilst writing Digitiphony 5 I thought that might be the end of it, but no, these weird (perhaps) musical statements were determined to go on emerging in spite of the frailness of the human body trying to keep up with composing them.

However, having written and recorded 7 of them I think it is time to pause and take stock. If ever these Digitiphonies were to be performed, which I hope one day they will be, they would need to be carefully and empathetically scored out, and that is no small task for just one of them, let alone all seven, not least because my computers, when I started No. 1 in 2006, were far less powerful and I had to assemble them in stages and separate layers as I did not have the cpu strength do record them all at once. In my frantic rush to get them written I did not pay heed to how easy it might, or might not be, to reassemble them to score them out. When Steinberg and Daniel Spreadbury first mooted the idea of building a new score writing program for the 21st Century I was very excited as I knew this would be perfect, with its graphical capabilities and flexible engraving within frames, for scoring Digitiphonies. After 4+ years of development, Dorico was finally released at the end of last year and as some may know, I have already delved deep into it, using it to score out my Concerto for Harp.

So, I have gone back to Digitiphony 1, dug out a motley selection of files and notes and started work scoring it out in Dorico. Due to the above reasons it is going to be a long job. As I get through all the Digitiphonies I think they will get easier for me to score as it will involve less reassembly from different projects, but to get through all of them is going to take me the best part of a decade. I will have to pause frequently as I am not able to stay sane without writing new music, and exploring new musical territory - the eminent composer Alan Belkin is starting an online series of instructional videos in modern harmony https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/an-online-course-about-modern-harmony-music#/ , which I will also want to devote some time to studying.

So things may seem quieter around here for a while - if you wondered why, that is the reason !

Here is a video of "Faerie Trance" from my album Eklektika. I am taking the opportunity of finishing Digitiphony 7 to musically take stock and use the time to play around a bit with a few things, hence the video ;p

Wishing anyone and everyone reading this the happiest of New Years.

The last several weeks I have been working to finish scoring out my concerto for harp, which I finished doing just before Christmas - a miniature version of the whole score is here -MLD_Concerto_For_Harp_Full_1_small.pdf

I am slowly approaching the conclusion of Digitiphony 7. The fourth movement is finished and I am about half way through the final, firth movement. The theme for the Digitiphony is 'Afterlives' - some of the postulated places us humans believe we may go to when we die. these theoretical afterlife destinations have had much effect on the way we live out lives before we even get near to finding out if they exist for real or not. The many musos and artistes who have died this year will bethere already. A great party awaits, if there is any justice in the universe. See you in 2017 !

I have realised Digitiphony 7 may need to be written in 5 parts. I have started the opening of Pt 4. The ground I think I need to cover before I finish includes the lie that is Hell/Purgatory - which keeps us all in line so that others may exploit us more easily (in the West for the last 1500 years anyway) and also a return to the bliss of our source, Eden, whatever you want to call it, which will be the final movement. Then I'll have this whole after-life thing covered ;p

I have taken a break from Digitiphony to familiarise myself with this new, fabulous app and I am scoring out my recently completed Concerto for Harp as a way of getting into it. the quality of the engraving is superb as you can see here

Digitiphony 7 Second Movement is now finished. Continuing with the theme of After Life Venues, this movement explores the road to Nirvana, through troubled expression then negation of self, attempted forced entry through intoxication to an easy, calm, long lasting peace.
My main music PC has gone down, so I am using the opportunity to try and sort out my studio, something I have not attempted since well before my stroke 2 years ago. So it will, sadly, create a hiatus in my writing while I attempt to disentangle the mass of wires, dust, old bits of gear and discarded bits of manuscript and note paper that have been cluttering up my musical space for so long. It's frustrating, but hopefully will be worth the time spent, and selling a few bits of tech will hopefully give me the funds to get a piping hot new computer. Watch this space... but not too avidly, I think it's going to take a month or three :-(

Michael Lisle Dunntag:mldunn.net,2005:Post/60692672016-04-21T12:00:00-12:002016-10-28T22:23:34-12:00Over halfway through Digitiphony 7 1st movement

The concept and tone of Digitiphony 7 is starting to appear in my head. I think it is going to be on the theme of 'ultimate destinations' in the ideology of a few different religions, or even humanist thought (which I guess would have elements of a void ! An interesting idea in music...) I am well over half way through the first movement now.

I'm also working on a Concerto for Harp and Chamber Orchestra, but I think I will keep any sneek previews of that one under wraps for now, it's gonna take me ages ;p Musical Multitasking, that's not me at all ! I am a new man since my stroke, it has to be said. Recovery has taken a while and is still ongoing, but the musical landscape on this side of the trauma is good ;p

Wishing everyone a peaceful, purposeful New Year !

I have been pretty obsessed with trying to finish Digitiphony 6 - I am three quarters of the way through the final movement and it's all getting a bit febrile ;p The first half of the movement is up on my soundcloud pages here -

I am a few minutes further in than that but I will probably hold off posting any more till the movement, and Digitiphony, are finished.

I also have been working on a piece inspired by the work of Mark R. Johnson, who has been building procedurally generated worlds for a project called Ultima Ratio Regum (The Final Argument of Kings). Mark possesses an incredible mind and I have been lucky enough to enter into an ongoing dialogue with him. Quite where it will lead I do not know, but so far his ideas have inspired this piece of music -

I will post again when Digitiphony 6 is finished, until then I am gonna shut up for a bit I think as I just want to get it finished... I always get like this towards the end of a project... wanna move on but can't leave it alone till it's right.

I have finished writing the third movement of Digitiphony 6. Other things going on in my life are making me slower in producing these, currently. It's frustrating, but I just have to keep beavering away patiently and I get there eventually. I was once told by a close friend that I would end up squeezing my composition into every available fragmented little space in my life to be able to keep functioning. 17 years later that seems to be exactly how I manage to keep writing these Digitiphonies. However I am NOT complaining ;p

I have started the third movement of Digitiphony 6. It's shaping up to be a slightly leftfield piece in 9/8 so far - it has become my tradition for the third movement of each of my Digitiphonies to be slightly off the wall, so I don't think I am straying too far from the brief for this ;p

I have finished the Second Movement of Digitiphony 6 - a slow movement bookended by two ambient soundscapes. This means I m now about half way through the Digitiphony.

I was asked by the Canadian Mezzo Soprano Sophie Keats to compose an electro tune for her Lyrics "Stars and Dreams" inspired by The writing of Emily Bronte. I obliged, and the resulting tune is now up at iTunes. it was also the quickest turnaround I think I have ever been involved in - I sent Sophie the finished master on a Tuesday evening and by Thursday morning it was being aired on UK local morningtime radio :-) Check it out here - https://itunes.apple.com/en/album/id1029885459

The last few weeks has been full of technology for me. As well as my update to Omnisphere 2, which will keep me occupied for years I reckon, I have now become the proud owner of a Surface tablet running the app Staffpad - for the first time since I was at school I am back to using longhand written music regularly for composing.... only now it gets converted to digital data without me having to do a thing :-) here are some little string quartets I have written with it so far

Back to the omnisphere update, here's a tune that uses all omnisphere patches (even the voice is being treated inside omnisphere). Sheesh. What a piece of kit ;p

I also have a new website, but if you are reading this you know that, 'cos you are here !

I am continuing to work on an aria by JS Bach (Electro version) for my partner Claire to sing.

I used it to experiment with my upgrade to Omnisphere 2, here is an ongoing instrumental version (in progress) https://soundcloud.com/m-l-dunn/js-bach-meets-omnisphere-2-erbarme-dich-electro-instrumental
